Luiza Baldan has an MA in Visual Languages and is a PhD candidate in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). She has a BFA from Florida International University (Miami, USA). In 2012, the artist published the book “São Casas”, and as of 2016, she is currently participating in the Photography Collectors Club at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo. Baldan is a professor at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Recent solo exhibitions include: “Perabé”, Cultural Centre São Paulo (Brazil, 2015); “Build Up”, MdM Gallery (Paris, France, 2014); “Índice”, Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil, 2013); “Corta Luz”, Pivô (São Paulo, Brazil, 2013); “São Casas”, Studio-X (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2012). Recent group exhibitions include: “Cruzamentos: Contemporary Art in Brazil”, The Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus, USA, 2014); “Escavar o Futuro”, Palácio das Artes (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 2013); “Lugar Nenhum”, Institute Moreira Salles (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2013); and “Travessias 2: Arte Contemporânea na Maré”, Galpão Bela Maré (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2013). Awards include: Viva Arte! (SMC RJ, Brazil, 2015); Art and Patrimony Iphan and Funarte Scholarship for Incentive in the Visual Arts (2013); Rumos Artes Visuais 2011-2013 Itaú Cultural; selection for the residency at Crac Valparaíso, Chile (2012); and the XI Marc Ferrez Photography/Funarte award (2010).

“Of the more than thirty houses where I lived throughout my life, Copan, in São Paulo, was the first one far from the coast. One day I heard that it was possible to see the sea without leaving the city, somewhere to the south, after Parelheiros. As absurd as it might sound, the story aroused interest in finding an almost fictitious landscape. So I started the Perabé project in December 2014.

What at first was only about finding a belvedere in São Paulo, became a project of crossings, of crossing the landscape until I reached Baixada Santista. In periodic trips over 10 months, I traveled different paths that could connect the capital of São Paulo to the coast, collecting the impressions in photographs and texts. Starting from Serra da Cantareira, I let myself be guided by characters, myths, stories and hazards, until I reached the district of Marapé (former Perabé), in Santos, which in Tupi means ‘path of the sea’”. – Luiza Baldan
