Presentation

We believe that Art has many important roles. It serves as open space to discuss and experiment new ideas and concepts. It has the power to unite people. It registers the most relevant discussions and innovations over time.

PIPA Institute was established in 2010 to support, help document and promote the development of Brazilian Contemporary Art.

PIPA Prize, the Institute’s first initiative, has grown bigger than just a Brazilian contemporary art award. Both the catalogues, and PIPA’s websites, premiopipa.com and pipaprize.com constitute an important research platform, used by collectors, curators, and gallerists, Brazilians, and foreigners. The websites feature a daily agenda of cultural events, critical texts, video-interviews and biographical pages of more than 550 artists who have been participated in the Prize since its first edition in 2010. This number increases every year with new nominees. This exclusive material is what makes PIPA Prize “The Window into Brazilian Contemporary art”.

In 2016, Luiz Camillo Osorio became the Curator of the Institute, enhancing the process of commissioning and acquisitions. Osorio selected the broad and up to date theme “Displacement”,  to frame the collection.

The collection is shown to the public through the website, occasional exhibitions and the loan of works to other institutions.

The Institute also promotes initiatives such as PIPA em Casa, a series of Podcasts, critical texts, video interviews and support for artists’ projects and commissioning artworks.
